When you get down to Myrtle Beach, you may want to swing by Wilmington on your way north, or over to the Grandparents (I assume that is part of the reason for the trip to SC), If you do, I can recommend the following:
Take the Southport/Fort Fisher Ferry and then hike around the Fort Fisher Museum and NC Aquarium grounds….there is also easy access to the beach there.
As for food (and I use that term loosely)
The BEST donuts on the planet are at Britt’s Donuts in Carolina Beach, I know you want “non-junk” for the kids, but once in a lifetime, they have to have Britts! LOL!!!
There is also a KOA in Wilmington, though based on some of the photos I’ve seen on your blog, it’s a step down from those places up in New England, but still has a pretty good rating.,,,,but isn’t really near anything (such as beaches or hiking trails).

Thank you for the Wilmington tips. I think we want to save Wilmington for a separate trip and give it the attention it deserves–and yes, we would camp at the KOA there–it is well reviewed and the interior photos look nice. We will look you up when we finally make the trip. Looks like a great place to live. We will also definitely make a stop at Britt’s and sample the donuts!
Should you get to the New Haven, CT, area you’ll find yourself in an veritable feast land with more great food choices than you can imagine. Pepe’s clam pizza, a style CT proudly trumpets at it’s own; the owners have branched into Yonkers, NY, I haven’t been there yet. You can sample Pepe’s in New Haven proper (2 locations) or if you are in the nabe try the less crowded but just as good locale at I-95’s exit 25. Then there is Bishop’s Orchard, off exit 57. Great fun for the kids here picking seasonal fruits and berries or if you’re short on time, wander into their Farm Market for lovely and mostly locally grown produce, pre made on site dinners and desserts, an assortment of regionally produced cheeses and cider doughnuts for that special treat. The orchard also sells locally produced wines and are listed on the Connecticut Wine Trail so there is truly something for everyone.
