RVFTA #23: Meet the Girl Campers!

Listen to The RV Atlas Podcasts…

On this week’s episode of RV Family Travel Atlas we interview Go RVing blogger, girl camper, and all around charm school graduate Janine Pettit. She is a girl camping ambassador and world class storyteller who is “incapable of being boring.” Listen to hear how Janine hooked up with Sisters on the Fly, her favorite campground, and her biggest camping fail ever. We would sit around a campfire with this lovely lady any night of the year!

We are also talking about some of the interesting people that we met at the Atlantic City RV Show: from our podcast listeners, to RV safety experts, to representatives from Jayco’s headquarters in Middlebury, Indiana, we made the rounds and made new friends.

And we convinced the nicest RV rep in America, Tom Wylie, to give us a walk-through tour of the 2015 Jayco White Hawk 28DSBH. After talking to Tom we kinda wanna upgrade to a new 2015. It was pretty sweet!

Don’t forget to check out our interview on this week’s episode of Roadtreking, a podcast by journalist Mike Wendland. We chatted with Mike about why we do what we do with our children and some of our recommendations for taking kids and grandkids on the road.

And we are hanging out as guest bloggers over the Camp Jellystone blog! Our post this week is about fun activities in the Luray, Virginia area. Next up? The perfect day in Shenandoah National Park.

All of this and so much more on episode 23 of RV Family Travel Atlas: Meet the Girl Campers.

Thanks so much Erin for all your wonderful feedback! If we didn’t live on opposite sides of the country, I know we would have great times sitting around the campfire together:-)

I LOVED this podcast. I totally identified with Janie Pettit. I grew up tent camping with my parents. It was something we did every summer until I was a teen. (Honestly, I loved it, so I’m not sure why we quit.) I went camping a couple of times with friends in college, but not much else until my oldest was a tiger scout. My younger son (they are only 20 months apart) and I always seemed to be the ones that went on the camping expeditions with the scouts and my older son. Some how my husband was always out of town or at a convention when the trips occurred. In the mean time, my parents had bought a camper – redid it, sold it, bought a popup and began doing a great deal of camping. That lead to anytime we were visiting (different coast and somehow my husband almost always busy when the boys and I went) the boys and I camping with my parents. I rediscovered how much I loved camping and much to my pleasure, my boys loved it too. My parents then graduated from a popup to a class c. They generously gave us their popup. The boys and I were over the moon. The husband, not so much. How could someone not like camping!?! Well, we’ve only had a chance to go once since we’ve gotten it, and it was with my parents last summer. Four adults and two boys in a popup is a bit much. He seemed to have had lots of fun, but now claims that he is glad he fooled me so well. We will be going on a camping trip over Spring Break, and almost a month long near cross country trip this summer – just the four of us. Fingers crossed he does like camping. However, if he does not, I am just as determined to take the boys and the three of us continue to travel and camp. I am saddened by the thought of him not coming because one of the things I think of when I think of camping is the family togetherness, but I am happy to hear about the groups of women that are doing it on their own. Perhaps, if I cannot persuade him to embrace such an amazing and wonderful past time, you will find me in one of these groups too.
Any way, just a way to long note to say thanks. I love listening to you guys and I loved hearing from Janine. Keep up the excellent work.

It’s funny…I think that for those of us who love to camp, it is so hard to imagine NOT loving it. We just sort of shake our heads in disbelief.
I’m glad you have had such a good time camping with your boys and parents anyway. And I really do hope the hubby gets into the spirit of things on your trip!
Yes, Janine is the bomb. We love her to pieces.
