Feed Your Belly and Soul with Jane and Michael Stern’s Roadfood

Feed Your Belly and Soul with Jane and Michael Stern’s Roadfood

It’s going to snow again tonight at the Jersey Shore. Enough I say!  ENOUGH!!!  When I spot that first seemingly innocent, seemingly cute snowflake I am going to go out into my backyard, shake my fists at the heavens, curse the Polar Vortex, and demand the immediate and unambiguous arrival of Spring. After I do that I’m going to relax and spend the rest of the evening mapping out some of our spring and summer road trips.  We have reservations for campgrounds in Myrtle Beach, The Brandywine Valley, Cape Cod, and the White... Wanna Camp with Kiddos and have a good time? Respect the Routine…

We went on our first long road trip with Max and Theo when they were not even three months old. We had no game plan; we did no research. Basically, we threw the boys in the car at 6:30 am and took off on a 13 hour drive. Learning to take care of twins is not an easy transition into parenthood, and the idea of staying home with them all summer seemed more painful than the idea of travel, so away we went. Ten months later, we bought our first camper and committed ourselves to learning how to explore the world with our children. Now Max and Theo... Read More

The Evolution of our Family Hikes (Gearing Up For Spring With L.L. Bean)

The Evolution of our Family Hikes (Gearing Up For Spring With L.L. Bean)

My boys are darn good hikers.  Not that they have a choice.  Since Stephanie and I started RVing with them four years ago we have spent over a hundred nights camping, and dozens of days hiking.  When they were just one we threw them in the truck, packed up the pop-up camper, and headed to Vermont and Maine for 16 days.  We were determined to do some serious family friendly hiking with them, and we did.   Of course that meant carrying them in our hiking packs.  So we carried them–and we carried them joyfully.  After a long winter of... Once a Year, A Hotel: Our Great Wolf Lodge Tradition

Once a Year, A Hotel: Our Great Wolf Lodge Tradition

Max and Theo have spent well over 100 nights of their short lives traveling up and down the Eastern Seaboard. Nevertheless, they have only stayed in a hotel three times. Wes clocks in at one night so far. Suffice it to say, we have one way that we like to travel and it involves hitching up and driving our trailer to a place that needs exploring. My mother once said it was like we were dragging our house behind us. Maybe so, but that suits us just fine. When you have three kids under four years old, having your house at the bottom of the... What I Learned From a Couple of Nice Weekends in February…

What I Learned From a Couple of Nice Weekends in February…

Years ago, long before the boys arrived on the scene, the temperatures hit the high sixties on a weekend in February. Jeremy and I had a different sort of life then, and the weather inspired us to hightail it to a bed and breakfast in Cape May where we spent the weekend walking and eating and laying around in the sand. It was one of those weekends that you hold on to forever, one of those memories that you can feel and smell. This past weekend we weren’t able to run off to a romantic locale. No, that’s not right at all. We... Read More

The Challenges of International RV Travel (Our Guest Bloggers Go Metric!)

The Challenges of International RV Travel (Our Guest Bloggers Go Metric!)

The Lively LIttle Campers are excited to read all about our guest bloggers’ adventures as they head to New Zealand on an epic RV adventure.  Here is the latest installment. The challenges of planning a trip outside of the United States are myriad.  The first challenge is, of course, planning the dates for the trip.  When crossing the Equator the seasons reverse.  So, what would be a winter trip here in the U. S. becomes a summer trip in New Zealand.  We have to plan for late summer temperatures and precipitation–while wearing wooly... Read More

It Was Spring Today At the Jersey Shore… (Manasquan Reservoir, NJ)

It Was Spring Today At the Jersey Shore… (Manasquan Reservoir, NJ)

When the temperature creeps up into the 50s during this sort of winter, it is almost impossible to decide what to do with the sunny respite. One feels a certain responsibility to enjoy every single second of pleasant weather. It is no wonder we ended up at the Manasquan Reservoir, knowing that us grownups could enjoy a refreshing walk and the boys would be happy with the playground at the end. It is a wonder it did not occur to us that melting snow pack on dirt paths might not be the perfect date for our jogging strollers. Not to worry. Max... Read More
