Autumn in South Jersey: You Don’t Need a RV for This Daytrip

Autumn in South Jersey: You Don’t Need a RV for This Daytrip

(You don’t need a camper for this trip…) A couple of months ago, Jeremy and I decided this fall would be the perfect time to take the boys to Washington D.C. for the first time. We picked Columbus Day weekend and booked the campground. Quite the coincidence that our plans coincided with a long-term government shutdown, and we were forced to cancel this past week. So we are staying local this weekend. We woke up to a beautiful fall sky, and are heading to one of our favorite autumn haunts (haha). Here we are at the Edwin B.... Read More

Making the Little Lies Count: Restaurant Tactics from the Campers

Making the Little Lies Count: Restaurant Tactics from the Campers

[space_80] Restaurant Tactics from the Lively Little Campers I have always been on the fence about the whole ‘lying to your kids’ thing. I’ve read all the articles and I get all the arguments. I know the experts advise direct and simple truths in the face of all questions. It sounds all good until your 3 year old asks you exactly how the doctor is going to help get baby Wesley out. I figure by the time they are ready for that direct truth, it will be someone else telling it, and I’m just fine with that. On the flip... Read More

This is How the Summer Ends….See You Next Year, Cape May

This is How the Summer Ends….See You Next Year, Cape May

Getting the best site at Seashore Campsites…  Walking towards the sunset… Hanging with the Wes Man…  Playing on the beach… *** *** *** *** Playing hide and seek… Shutting down the pool for the season… Searching for Monarch Butterflies at “Butterfly Beach”… And finding them… *** Eating gummy frogs… Sharing ice cream at “the point”… *** Spotting dolphins swimming by… And going for one last ocean swim… Thank you Cape... Campfire Cuisine Giveaway (You can use this in the regular kitchen, too)

A few weeks ago Stephanie reviewed a cookbook that she really loved called Campfire Cuisine published by the adventurous Quirk Books.  She found the recipes to be excellent both for camping and for home.  Here is a quote from her review: Campfire Cuisine doesn’t just appeal to me as a ‘camper’, it also serves as a great resource for weekday meal planning. Even if you are not now (or ever!) heading out in the RV, you could use the make ahead tips for the nights you have to get dinner on the table fast. I reached out to Quirk... Read More

The Curse of Hawk Mountain: Two Times is Not a Charm

The Curse of Hawk Mountain: Two Times is Not a Charm

Two years ago, in late October, we took Max and Theo to Allentown for a long weekend. It was beautiful. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed the Lehigh Valley Zoo and a great train ride through the country. There was pumpkin picking and a halloween parade. Quintessential fall weekend, etc, etc. We figured we would squeeze in one more activity before heading home on Sunday, so we drove (camper hitched and all) to Hawk Mountain, where we planned on a taking in a raptor show and enjoying a nice hike. Ha. Maybe they were tired from the weekend.... Read More

It’s Time To Get Tough With Your Sock Drawer: Darn Tough Socks

It’s Time To Get Tough With Your Sock Drawer: Darn Tough Socks

At the beginning of the summer, after reading an article in the Wall Street Journal,  I decided to get Darn Tough with my feet and with my sock drawer.  I decided to purchase two pairs of high end socks made by Darn Tough in Vermont (for hiking and casual wear) and to throw away 12 pairs of my funkadelic old socks.  I wanted to create some space in my sock drawer and test out some sweet new socks while hiking in Vermont.  I ended up falling in love with them.  Here’s why. My socks get very sweaty and nasty after a long hike, and even... Read More

The Last Great Hayride: Allentown KOA, Pennsylvania

The Last Great Hayride: Allentown KOA, Pennsylvania

We had another lovely stay at the Allentown KOA last weekend.  It served as a convenient base camp for exploring the gently rolling hills and picture perfect farms of the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania.  The campground itself is deeply wooded and tucked away, far from traffic. A gentle stream also meanders through the property and many of the sites rest directly on its banks.  We were travelling with our good friends again and we had booked “buddy sites” so our campers could face each other, creating a large common area in...
