ONE PLAYGROUND TO RULE THEM ALL! (Allentown, PA)

ONE PLAYGROUND TO RULE THEM ALL! (Allentown, PA)

I have to confess, I was looking for food.  Before we left for our quick weekend trip to the Allentown KOA I went on to the RV.NET forum and asked for family-friendly restaurant recommendations near the campground.  I got a few responses, but more importantly, a friendly member from Cape May “HIGHLY” recommended the Cedar Beach Playground in Allentown.  They said that it was “an absolutely great park” that their grandchildren had enjoyed for hours.  So I put on my Captain Internet costume and used the Google to find... Campfire Cuisine, by Robin Donovan (this is for you kitchen dwellers, too)

Honestly, I rolled my eyes when my husband handed me this book. Four years ago, when we first started camping with the boys, I did a little research on ‘camping’ recipes. It wasn’t like I was planning on cooking over the campfire or anything…two babies on a campsite kept us busy enough without having to worry about open flames and charred meat. I was just looking for some tips for planning simple meals that traveled well. I quickly found out that if you search for camping recipes you basically find recipes for stews or... Read More

The Nightlight Chronicles, Cont. (or, when do they start just going to bed?)

The Nightlight Chronicles, Cont. (or, when do they start just going to bed?)

A few months ago, I posted about our nightlight that turns green when the boys are allowed to get out of bed in the morning. This handy gadget keeps our early risers in bed until a fairly reasonable hour and it was a complete catastrophe when we left it behind on our first camping trip of the season. The folks at American Innovative (makers of said nightlight) saw the review and asked us if we would be willing to try one of their new products…Danny the Penguin. Sure, we said. Send him our way. And they did. They sent one Danny the... Read More

Thank You Vermont. We Can’t Wait to Come Back.

We came home from Vermont over two weeks ago, but part of me still feels like I’m there.   It was one of my favorite road trips of all time–and I’ve been on a few.  Here are my top ten reasons for still wanting to say thank you to Vermont: 1.  For your family friendly hikes and swims filled with beauty and adventure. 2.  For your underrated roadside barbecue joints.  Vermont, the South has nothing on you! 3.  For making me feel like Wordsworth ambling around the Lake District on golden summer days.  I’ll take... My National Park Story Is Up…How About Yours?

My National Park Story Is Up…How About Yours?

I stumbled across–by way of a tweet–this great project by the National Parks Conservation Association. You can submit your National Park story to www.myparkstory.org and they have a bunch published on the site. As I read through them, I was really encouraged by how many families have built lasting, beautiful memories by enjoying one of the best investments this country has made. So, of course, I submitted my own story. I could have chosen from many important moments I have experienced with my children in a National Park. In the... Read More

Campfire Confessions (Or the lonely girl who hated s’mores)

Campfire Confessions (Or the lonely girl who hated s’mores)

I absolutely hate marshmallows. I don’t like the taste of them. I don’t like the smell of them. And I really hate brushing the boys’ teeth after they have eaten them. I have sat around close to 30 campfires this summer and haven’t had a single s’more. So what is my evening snack of choice? At home it is popcorn. And certainly not the kind you get out of the microwave. In fact I don’t even have a popcorn maker. I do it on the stove–in a pot– and it comes out perfect every time. So my husband... Read More
