Guest Blog: The Campgrounds of New Zealand

Here is the latest post from our guest bloggers John and Cathy, who recently returned from an epic RV adventure in New Zealand… * About a year ago we decided to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary with a trip to New Zealand.   Since we have lived an RV lifestyle, both here and in Europe, for the past 30 years, we made the decision to rent a small motorhome and travel in New Zealand using commercial campgrounds.  We wanted to stay in commercial campgrounds and compare them to campgrounds here in America.  We stay a lot at KOA campgrounds... Campground Sticker Shock? Unpacking the Value of a Cabin

Campground Sticker Shock? Unpacking the Value of a Cabin

Jeremy and I realized recently that a certain scenario keeps repeating itself. Friends of ours will express interest in coming along with us on a trip. If they are not interested in tent camping, we enthusiastically recommend cabins as a great way to experience a campground without the gear and prep that goes hand in hand with roughing it. Our friends love the idea until we go to make reservations. Then BAM! Sticker shock and retreat. It turns out that most people assume cabins will be significantly cheaper than a hotel room. The truth is,... Read More

Wanna Camp with Kiddos and have a good time? Respect the Routine…

Wanna Camp with Kiddos and have a good time? Respect the Routine…

We went on our first long road trip with Max and Theo when they were not even three months old. We had no game plan; we did no research. Basically, we threw the boys in the car at 6:30 am and took off on a 13 hour drive. Learning to take care of twins is not an easy transition into parenthood, and the idea of staying home with them all summer seemed more painful than the idea of travel, so away we went. Ten months later, we bought our first camper and committed ourselves to learning how to explore the world with our children. Now Max and Theo... Read More

This is How the Summer Ends….See You Next Year, Cape May

Getting the best site at Seashore Campsites…  Walking towards the sunset… Hanging with the Wes Man…  Playing on the beach… *** *** *** *** Playing hide and seek… Shutting down the pool for the season… Searching for Monarch Butterflies at “Butterfly Beach”… And finding them… *** Eating gummy frogs… Sharing ice cream at “the point”… *** Spotting dolphins swimming by… And going for one last ocean swim… Thank you Cape... The Last Great Hayride: Allentown KOA, Pennsylvania

The Last Great Hayride: Allentown KOA, Pennsylvania

We had another lovely stay at the Allentown KOA last weekend.  It served as a convenient base camp for exploring the gently rolling hills and picture perfect farms of the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania.  The campground itself is deeply wooded and tucked away, far from traffic. A gentle stream also meanders through the property and many of the sites rest directly on its banks.  We were travelling with our good friends again and we had booked “buddy sites” so our campers could face each other, creating a large common area in... Thank You Vermont. We Can’t Wait to Come Back.

We came home from Vermont over two weeks ago, but part of me still feels like I’m there.   It was one of my favorite road trips of all time–and I’ve been on a few.  Here are my top ten reasons for still wanting to say thank you to Vermont: 1.  For your family friendly hikes and swims filled with beauty and adventure. 2.  For your underrated roadside barbecue joints.  Vermont, the South has nothing on you! 3.  For making me feel like Wordsworth ambling around the Lake District on golden summer days.  I’ll take... Those Magical Places (Quechee / Pine Valley KOA)

Those Magical Places (Quechee / Pine Valley KOA)

The Quechee / Pine Valley KOA in Vermont had me at hello.  I had emailed the campground a couple of weeks before our visit asking for a list of family-friendly hikes, and the co-owner, Cindy, sent me a friendly email that became the blue print for our adventures. So I was predisposed to liking the place before we even pulled in.  But then we actually pulled in…. It took me about 20 seconds to realize that our whole crew was not going to like it here–we were going to love it.  The campground, which has an upper and a lower level,... Read More
