The Curse of Hawk Mountain: Two Times is Not a Charm

The Curse of Hawk Mountain: Two Times is Not a Charm

Two years ago, in late October, we took Max and Theo to Allentown for a long weekend. It was beautiful. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed the Lehigh Valley Zoo and a great train ride through the country. There was pumpkin picking and a halloween parade. Quintessential fall weekend, etc, etc. We figured we would squeeze in one more activity before heading home on Sunday, so we drove (camper hitched and all) to Hawk Mountain, where we planned on a taking in a raptor show and enjoying a nice hike. Ha. Maybe they were tired from the weekend.... Read More

The Last Great Hayride: Allentown KOA, Pennsylvania

The Last Great Hayride: Allentown KOA, Pennsylvania

We had another lovely stay at the Allentown KOA last weekend.  It served as a convenient base camp for exploring the gently rolling hills and picture perfect farms of the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania.  The campground itself is deeply wooded and tucked away, far from traffic. A gentle stream also meanders through the property and many of the sites rest directly on its banks.  We were travelling with our good friends again and we had booked “buddy sites” so our campers could face each other, creating a large common area in... ONE PLAYGROUND TO RULE THEM ALL! (Allentown, PA)

ONE PLAYGROUND TO RULE THEM ALL! (Allentown, PA)

I have to confess, I was looking for food.  Before we left for our quick weekend trip to the Allentown KOA I went on to the RV.NET forum and asked for family-friendly restaurant recommendations near the campground.  I got a few responses, but more importantly, a friendly member from Cape May “HIGHLY” recommended the Cedar Beach Playground in Allentown.  They said that it was “an absolutely great park” that their grandchildren had enjoyed for hours.  So I put on my Captain Internet costume and used the Google to find... Thank You Vermont. We Can’t Wait to Come Back.

We came home from Vermont over two weeks ago, but part of me still feels like I’m there.   It was one of my favorite road trips of all time–and I’ve been on a few.  Here are my top ten reasons for still wanting to say thank you to Vermont: 1.  For your family friendly hikes and swims filled with beauty and adventure. 2.  For your underrated roadside barbecue joints.  Vermont, the South has nothing on you! 3.  For making me feel like Wordsworth ambling around the Lake District on golden summer days.  I’ll take... Future Summer Camp Prospects? VINS, Quechee, Vermont

Future Summer Camp Prospects? VINS, Quechee, Vermont

On our last morning in Vermont, we decided to let the campers stretch their legs before the long car ride home and headed to VINS, the Vermont Institute of Natural Science, which was right up the road from our campground. The center is perfectly designed to blend in with its natural surroundings, and the parking lot, buildings, and educational areas don’t distract from the beauty of the landscape. * The boys watched the songbirds being fed, and particularly enjoyed a visit to the bird hospital. The signs warned them to be quiet in the... Read More

The Art of Hand Holding: Quechee Gorge, Vermont

The Art of Hand Holding: Quechee Gorge, Vermont

Our visit to the Quechee Gorge was one of my favorite moments of our whole Vermont trip. The mile hike down to the bottom of the Gorge was perfect for kids and full of quiet, easy beauty for the adults. * * * Down at the bottom, heaven presented itself in the form of water and rocks. Water and rocks…a magical pairing for our boys right up there with peanut butter and jelly. This is when it got a little tricky. Jeremy and I always push the limits a bit when we travel with the kids.  We want them to be wowed. We want them to have a blast.... Read More
