On this week’s Campground of the Week’s podcast episode, Larissa Richardson from ThePopUpPrincess.com, takes us back to the amazing state park system in Oregon, and reviews Ainsworth State Park, just 30 miles east of Portland.
This campground is simple, but makes a perfect base camp for exploring both the downtown area of Portland and the beautiful Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
One of the best features of the campground is that it offers full hook ups at a bargain price of $24. Larissa also raves about the clean (and free!) showers with plenty of hot water to keep her teenagers happy. The campground isn’t large though, so if you want to nab a spot you should probably book early. Listen to the episode to hear even more insider tips from Larissa and also her one (loud) nobody’s perfect complaint.
This campground is perfectly situated for visiting two of the most famous attractions in the region: Multnomah Falls and Oneonta Gorge. It is also perfectly situated for visiting Portland, one of the best foodie cities in our country. Larissa and her family feasted at the following famous joints:
- VooDoo Donuts
- Waffle Window
- Salt and Straw
If you need to kill some time between meals, check out the following attractions:
- The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry
- The Portland Zoo
- Farmers Market
- Planetarium
And don’t forget to wear some comfortable walking shoes and enjoy lots of time in the great outdoors–a pastime that folks fully embrace in this neck of the woods.

Great post! We once took an epic road trip from Seattle to Los Angeles and made a stop in Portland on our way. It’s a great stop for anyone who’s a fan of craft beer- not to mention some really beautiful and interesting sites like the Shanghai tunnels or the Museum of Contemporary Craft which is the oldest, continuously-running craft establishment in the US. I put the link to the full post below if you want to check it out!
