Shenandoah National Park is one of our nation’s great natural treasures, and on this Campground of the Week podcast episode, Janine Pettit is recommending that you stay at the Luray KOA during your visit.
Campground Location
The Luray KOA is one of the most peaceful, beautiful countryside campgrounds you will ever come across, surrounded on all sides by farm pastures dotted with cows. It is located just minutes from the Thornton Gap entrance, making it a convenient location for exploring both the north and south portions of Skyline Drive.
The campground is on the smaller side, with about 60 full hook up sites. Most are pull thru. It also offers a variety of cabins and some deluxe tent sites, a trending feature at many KOA campgrounds. One of the highlights here are the deluxe patio sites, offering concrete pads, patio furniture, stone fire pits, and beautiful landscaping.
Campground Amenities
The layout of the Luray KOA is ideal, offering a large grassy commons area in the middle of the campsites with a pavilion, play area, and covered ping pong table. Other campground amenities include:
- pool
- dog park
- billiards room
- bathhouses/laundry facilities
- camp kitchen
Campground Activities
The Luray KOA is more of a base camp than a resort, and doesn’t provide a packed calendar of organized activities. However, they do have on-site brick pizza oven where you can purchase a yummy dinner on designated nights of the week.
Area Attractions
The Luray KOA is ideally located to explore both the Shenandoah National Park and other area attractions:
- Skyline Drive
- Harry F Byrd, Sr. Visitor Center (near Big Meadows)
- Dickey Ridge Visitor Center (near Fox Hollow Trail)
- Luray Caverns
