Campground #130: Deer Run RV Park in Troy, Alabama

Deer Run RV Park is located in Troy, Alabama, about 100 miles north of Destin, Florida, two hours west of Atlanta, and 150 miles south of Birmingham. The campground is located right on HWY US 231, which is a popular road for campers making their way through the area. This makes Deer Run RV Park a great stop along your route through the southern part of the country.

Our guest correspondent this week, Liz Wilcox from The Virtual Campground, was excited to review this campground since it was one of her family’s first great campground experiences. This Good Sam park is a private, family-owned property and Liz said they made them feel completely at home during their stay. Deer Run RV Park has a campground (rather than RV park) feel with lots of trees and impeccably maintained landscaping.

Campground Details: Deer Run RV Park

Deer Run RV Park is a large campground, especially for the area, with about 100 total sites. All are full hook up and all but a few are pull-through. The newer sites in the back are flat gravel and very long, built particularly for very large rigs.

Liz loved the fact that landscaping was such a priority at this campground. She loved the view of two fishing ponds with lots of room all over to run and walk around. The grass is always cut, and sites are always cleared of debris.

The rates are reasonable at $38 per night or $228 per week. Guests can usually snag a site at the last minute unless there is bad weather (read: hurricane) in Florida. At those times, this will be one of the first places to fill up.

There are three distinct sections of the park. When you drive in, the bulk of the sites are right there in the front. While close together, the sites are still a reasonable size.

Keep driving across the pond and there is a smaller section near the bath/laundry. These sites were the original campsites on the campground, and there are about 35-40 of them. Again, the sites are close, but not obnoxiously so. These sites are closer to the road and you may experience road noise.

Way in the back behind first section are the new, large gravel sites. You can’t hear the road from there and you are backed up to the woods. That said, there are no trees so depending on the time of year, it may get hot back there!

Campground Amenities and Activities: Deer Run RV Park

Liz likes the refreshing pool, but she loves the spa that’s right next store in a old-fashioned, quaint A-frame building. Guests can get massages right on site, and who doesn’t want a massage while camping??!!

Deer Run RV Park also has an 24/7 air conditioned laundry room, and a lounge with computer, games, and 2 cable TVs. They host potluck dinners and game nights in the clubhouse, which also has a full kitchen.

Liz also happens to be a big fan of the bath houses, but you’ll have to listen to the podcast for all those details…

Other Campground Details: Deer Run RV Park

Although cell phone coverage is excellent, be prepared for spotty Wifi and plan in advance. But mostly just be prepared for great hospitality and excellent customer service. Guests receive popcorn when they check in (FTW!). And Liz raves about the front desk help as well as the friendliness of all the camp workers.

Regional Attractions near Deer Run RV Park

Troy University is really close and a beautiful campus to walk around on or catch a collegiate football, basketball, etc game.

The Montgomery Zoo is less than 45 minutes away and worth the trip! So much fun and they have a ski lift to show you around the park!

Butter and Egg adventures is about 10 minutes away and has zip lines, high ropes courses, laser tag, and escape rooms.

But Liz’s favorite place of all near this campground is The Square in Troy. It’s a small downtown area with local ice cream, restaurants, and shops.

A BIG thank you to Liz Wilcox for coming on the show and telling us about one of her favorite campgrounds. Go hang out with this lovely (and funny!) lady over at LizWilcox.com and nab a FREE copy of her book Tales from the Black Tank here!

See you at the campground!
