On this episode of RV Family Travel Atlas, we are diving into the fascinating and quirky world of molded fiberglass travel trailers, otherwise known as egg campers. These RVs have their very own cult following, so we went to the source and invited a Casita owner onto the show to dish on the drama of researching, buying, and camping in a fiberglass trailer.
Dean May, and his wife Laura, bought a 2005 Casita 17′ Freedom Deluxe travel trailer just last year. They are recent empty nesters looking forward to retirement in about 10 years. A few years ago, they never imagined themselves as RV owners, but that all changed with one fateful group text between Dean and his brothers and brothers-in-law. In this episode, we will learn the story behind their egg camper purchase, and the journey to finding the perfect tow vehicle to haul it.
Dean also takes us inside the world of molded fiberglass travel trailer manufacturers. Here are the companies mentioned in this episode:
- Scamp Trailers
- Casita
- Escape Trailers
- Bigfoot Trailers
- Oliver Trailers
- Parkliner Trailers
- Lil Snoozy Trailers
- EggCamper
- Nest
- Happier Camper
- Armadillo
If you are interested in researching or purchasing a molded fiberglass travel trailer, Dean highly recommends the following resources:
And Dean and Laura also highly recommend checking out the great egg camper rallies and events held around the country each year. Here are the events mentioned in this episode:
- Green Eggs and Ham Rally, Alabama
- Eggs ala Bourbon Rally, Kentucky
- Eggs on the Hiawassee River, Georgia
- Cherokee Egg Rally, North Carolina
- Land between the Lakes Egg Rally, Tennessee
You might think the world of the travel trailer is boring, blah, and bland. But we know that Casita Dean hatched a plan to own the most adorable tiny camper out there. You are listening to Episode #113: Casita Dean and the invasion of the Egg People!

Great Podcast with Casita Dean and the Egg People!
I can fully relate to their search for a trailer, even doing the spread sheet and all. There was a lot of great information during the interview. Well worth listening to.
I will be checking out more of the RVFTA’s Podcast / Great RVFTA Forum as well.

East Tennessee
Hi Dan and Rita,
Thanks. The RVFTA Podcast is an amazing podcast for folks interested in RVing and the lifestyle. The forum has been around for almost a year and is another great medium for learning and interacting about RVing.
East Tennessee? We are almost neighbors! Great areas to hike, camp, and RV in your neck of the woods.
Take care,
Dean
Hey Dean,
I feel as I I know you from you from your interview with RVFTA’s Podcast.
We love the Smokey Mountains. We’re retired military and have had the opportunity to live any where we wanted twice, both time chose the Smokey’s, 1st in Western NC and now Mountain City, TN..
Maybe one day we can share the same campfire!
Dan and Rita
Hi Dan,
I have been so impressed with how friendly the RV community is. Plus, social media can be a great way to create community as well.
Laura has three brothers and two are retired military. We have three nephews as well that are or have been in the military. Thank you for your service.
Looking forward to that campfire!!!
Take care,
Dean
Dean,
Thank you for your military support.
Every time Rita and I see a Casita Egg now, we’ll be wondering if it’s Dean and Laura!
We are proud owners of a “Lil Snoozy” Egg. We’ve attended several Egg Rallies now. The last being in November at the 1st annual “Camp Snoozy” at Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park™ River Bottom Farms in Swansea, SC..
We’ll bring the Marshmallows!
Blessed,
Dan and Rita
Hi Dan,
I did not realize that you had a Lil Snoozy. SWEET! Those are sharp egg campers. I looked at them a great deal when I was in research mode for an egg camper. I have seen the outside of one and Laura got to see inside as well during a rally in October. Would love to see your Lil Snoozy sometime. Given we both own egg campers, I bet we will cross paths sooner rather than later. Laura and I plan to attend the following rallies in 2017:
Green Eggs ‘n Ham Rally in Montgomery, AL in March.
Eggs on the Hiawassee in Hiawassee, GA in May.
Eggs A La Bourbon Rally in Bardstown, KY in June.
Land Between the Lakes Rally in Dover, TN in October.
Maybe others???
Looking forward to meeting you.
Take care,
Dean
