How We Roll When a Campground Rocks! (Myrtle Beach KOA)

How We Roll When a Campground Rocks! (Myrtle Beach KOA)

When we pulled into the Myrtle Beach KOA and saw families lounging by the pool and kids romping through the spray ground my son Max asked, “can we always come back here?”  Both of the boys were still buckled up in their car seats but they knew that this campground was going to be special–and they were so right. We had just pulled in, but it was quickly becoming apparent that we had discovered one of our new favorite places on planet earth.  We had also finally put the long, cold New Jersey winter somewhere far, far behind... Season Opener: Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

It’s pretty bad around here, folks. Our boys are so desperate for the road that they are building ‘campgrounds’ out of their Megablocks and Spinaroos. Jeremy took the camper down to the dealership for a bit of a freshening up this weekend, and something about the act of hitching up and pulling out gets Max and Theo all amped up for our first spring trip. Lucky for them (and us!) we are just weeks away from our season opener. We have always headed south in the spring, but never quite far enough to really shake off the chill... Read More

Coffee Table Mojo: KOA and the Art of Kamping

Coffee Table Mojo: KOA and the Art of Kamping

KOA And The Art of Kamping It’s only early December but I miss camping season already.  I love the holidays as much as the next dad–but I love getting out in our RV even more.  Our family has spent over a hundred nights camping during the past four years and most of those nights have been spent at KOA campgrounds.  Stephanie calls me a “KOA Fanboy,” and its true.  I like their friendly cancellation policy and their kid friendly activities and amenities.  But what I have really loved the most about the KOA campgrounds... The Last Great Hayride: Allentown KOA, Pennsylvania

The Last Great Hayride: Allentown KOA, Pennsylvania

We had another lovely stay at the Allentown KOA last weekend.  It served as a convenient base camp for exploring the gently rolling hills and picture perfect farms of the Lehigh Valley region of Pennsylvania.  The campground itself is deeply wooded and tucked away, far from traffic. A gentle stream also meanders through the property and many of the sites rest directly on its banks.  We were travelling with our good friends again and we had booked “buddy sites” so our campers could face each other, creating a large common area in... Those Magical Places (Quechee / Pine Valley KOA)

Those Magical Places (Quechee / Pine Valley KOA)

The Quechee / Pine Valley KOA in Vermont had me at hello.  I had emailed the campground a couple of weeks before our visit asking for a list of family-friendly hikes, and the co-owner, Cindy, sent me a friendly email that became the blue print for our adventures. So I was predisposed to liking the place before we even pulled in.  But then we actually pulled in…. It took me about 20 seconds to realize that our whole crew was not going to like it here–we were going to love it.  The campground, which has an upper and a lower level,... Read More

When Base Camp Feels Like Home (Brattleboro North KOA)

When Base Camp Feels Like Home (Brattleboro North KOA)

As we packed up the camper on the last day of our stay at the Brattleboro North KOA my mother-in-law mentioned that the campground had started to feel like home.  I agreed wholeheartedly.  This southern Vermont gem is possibly the best managed family campground that we have ever visited.  Ernie, Beverly, and their son Justin made us feel comfortable and welcome on a daily basis.  They are big-hearted people that are lucky enough to love what they are doing.  They also seemed to be having just as much fun as we were during kid-friendly... Luray KOA: Neat and Tidy, Meet Your Match

Luray KOA: Neat and Tidy, Meet Your Match

When my husband suggested that we break up the drive from Asheville to New Jersey by stopping in Luray, I was less than supportive. I barely had clean clothes left. There was nothing but crumbs in the pantry. I was ready for home. But pushing Wes past six hours is, at this point, a self-defeating proposition, so I agreed to a couple of nights at the Luray KOA right outside of Shenandoah National Park. And my husband was, as he so often is, pushy yet right. My first comment about the campground was “Wow, this entrance is small.” I... Read More
